Maruti, Tata, Mahindra or Hyundai: Who Won the June Auto Sales Race?

Synopsis: June turned out to be another strong month for India’s automobile industry, with most leading manufacturers reporting healthy year-on-year growth. While one company retained its leadership in overall volumes, others impressed with rapid growth in SUVs, electric vehicles, and exports. Here’s how the four major automakers performed.

The Indian auto sector kicked off the new quarter on a positive note with leading passenger car makers reporting encouraging June sales. Most automakers posted decent year-on-year growth on higher demand for SUVs, better exports, and strong customer bookings, but the competitive landscape is changing. Here’s how Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, and Hyundai Motor India performed in the month.

Maruti Suzuki Retains the Crown

Maruti Suzuki continued to dominate the Indian passenger vehicle market in June 2026, reporting 147,187 domestic passenger vehicle sales, compared to 118,906 units in the corresponding month last year. The company’s strong performance was supported by broad-based demand across its portfolio.

Utility vehicles remained one of the biggest growth drivers, with sales rising to 61,726 units, while its compact car lineup, comprising popular models such as the Baleno, Swift, WagonR and Dzire, continued to contribute significantly to overall volumes. The balanced product mix across hatchbacks, sedans and SUVs helped Maruti comfortably retain its leadership in the domestic passenger vehicle market.

The company’s export business also delivered another strong performance during the month. Maruti Suzuki exported 42,768 passenger vehicles in June 2026, registering healthy growth over 37,842 units exported in the same period last year. The robust export performance reflects the growing global acceptance of Maruti’s vehicles and further strengthens its position as India’s largest passenger vehicle exporter, providing an additional growth engine alongside its dominant domestic business.

Mahindra Continues SUV Momentum

Mahindra & Mahindra continued its strong momentum in the passenger vehicle market during June 2026, driven by sustained demand for its SUV portfolio. The company reported 60,393 domestic passenger vehicle (SUV) sales, registering a 28 percent year-on-year growth compared to 47,306 units in June 2025. For the first quarter of FY27, cumulative passenger vehicle sales stood at 174,745 units, reflecting a 15 percent increase over the corresponding period last year. The consistent growth highlights Mahindra’s strengthening position in the SUV segment, supported by strong customer demand and an expanding lineup of utility vehicles.

The company’s passenger vehicle exports also witnessed healthy growth during the month. Mahindra exported 1,111 SUVs in June 2026, taking total passenger vehicle sales, including exports, to 61,504 units. The steady improvement in export volumes indicates rising acceptance of Mahindra’s SUV portfolio in international markets alongside its strong domestic performance.

Tata Motors Records Fastest Growth

Although Tata Motors sold fewer vehicles than Maruti and Mahindra, it emerged as one of the biggest gainers in terms of growth. The company reported 63,083 passenger vehicle sales in June, a remarkable 69% year-on-year increase. Domestic passenger vehicle sales stood at 62,076 units, while international business contributed 1,007 units.

The biggest highlight came from its electric vehicle business, where EV sales surged to 14,800 units, marking an impressive 183% growth over the previous year and representing the company’s highest-ever monthly EV sales. Management also indicated that demand remains healthy despite temporary supply constraints affecting the Sierra, with production expected to improve from the second quarter onward.

Hyundai Faces Temporary Headwinds

Hyundai Motor India said total monthly sales stood at 51,335 units, comprising 39,635 domestic sales and 11,700 exports. Hyundai’s June was also affected by a fire at one of its suppliers’ manufacturing plants, which resulted in a production loss of almost 13,900 units during the month, the automaker said. However, the company said that production normalised from June 22 after arranging alternate component supplies and expects to recover the lost production during the second quarter of FY27.

Who Emerged as the Leader?

In June 2026, Maruti Suzuki comfortably retained its position as the largest automaker in the country with sales of 200,390 units, far ahead of its rivals. Mahindra & Mahindra was second with 1,06,207 units, supported by steady demand for its SUV range. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles was next with 63,083 units but was notable for the fastest growth among the four companies on the back of stellar performance in electric vehicles. Hyundai Motor India sold 51,335 units, and its performance was hit by production disruptions temporarily, and not by a fall in demand.

Conclusion

The sales numbers for June indicate that the passenger vehicle market in India is still experiencing a healthy demand, though the growth drivers vary for each manufacturer. Maruti Suzuki remains the undisputed volume leader with its broad product portfolio and strong export business. Mahindra continues to gain market share in the high-demand SUV segment, while Tata Motors is rapidly strengthening its position with record-breaking electric vehicle sales and new product launches.

Hyundai has resumed production after temporary supply-chain disruptions, and hopes to make up for lost volumes in the months to come. With the festive season coming up and a slew of new launches lined up, the battle between India’s top automakers is likely to get further intense in the coming quarters.
